Podcasting has become very popular recently. Many companies now offer podcasts as part of their marketing strategies. However, what should you focus on when planning out your own podcast?
Here’s a quick guide to getting started with your own podcast.
1. What do I want my podcast to cover?
Podcasting has become increasingly popular among bloggers and content creators alike. Many podcasters use their podcasts to build traffic to their blogs by sharing relevant information and engaging listeners through interviews and discussions. However, what subject should you focus on when starting out? How do you decide what topics to talk about?
The answer lies in determining how many hours per week you have available for recording new shows. If you’re looking at creating a weekly podcast, then you’ll need to plan accordingly. You may also consider focusing on specific niches or industries if they interest you more than other areas.
2. Do I have enough time to record all this material?
This question comes up often because most people don’t realize how much work goes into producing quality audio recordings. It takes anywhere between 30 minutes to several hours to produce a single hour-long podcast. The good news is that once you’ve recorded your first couple of shows, you’ll quickly learn which types of stories lend themselves best to being told over the airwaves.
3. Will anyone listen to my podcast?
This is probably the biggest concern for most podcasters who start off without having done anything before. After all, why would someone want to hear something they already heard somewhere else? But there are ways around this problem. First, choose a topic that interests you so you enjoy talking about it. Second, think about whether you’d rather give away free samples of your product or services to potential customers. Third, find some friends or family members willing to listen to your podcast and to help build your target audience, ask them to tell everyone they know about it!
4. Is my voice suitable?
You might not feel comfortable speaking publicly, especially if you haven’t had formal training. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t attempt to launch a podcast though. Many online resources can teach you everything you need to know about making high-quality audio recordings. Start small and practise until you feel confident. Remember, no matter how bad your initial efforts sound, you can always edit later.
5. Can I afford hosting costs?
Hosting costs vary depending on where you live, but generally speaking, you will pay $0-$20 per month for basic podcast hosting provider plans. This amount includes bandwidth and storage space. Hosting companies offer discounts for larger amounts of monthly usage, so check out their websites for details.
6. What podcast recording equipment do I need?
Audio quality is paramount and here are two major components needed to create a successful podcast: microphones and software. Microphones come in different varieties, including condenser mics, dynamic mics and omnidirectional mics. Recording software programs include Audacity, Hindenburg Journalist, GarageBand and iMovie. These applications will support your editing process and allow you to cut, trim and mix multiple tracks of audio files and publish your episodes to podcast apps and directories.
